'Ludicrous': Jaishankar rejects China's claim on Arunachal Pradesh

Regarding the ongoing boundary discussions with China, Jaishankar acknowledged the complexity of the challenge, particularly in finding a sustainable equilibrium between two rising powers with distinct histories, populations, and capabilities. He expressed India's disappointment at China's actions in 2020, which disrupted the previously established agreements and led to the Eastern Ladakh border standoff.

External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, on Saturday firmly rebuffed China's persistent claims regarding Arunachal Pradesh, dismissing them as utterly absurd. Speaking at the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) in Singapore, Jaishankar reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India and emphasized that India's stance on this issue has remained consistent over time.

"This is not a new issue. I mean China has laid claim, it has expanded its claim. The claims are ludicrous to begin with and remain ludicrous today," he said in response to a question on the Arunachal issue.

Jaishankar emphasised that Arunachal Pradesh was a "natural part of India."

"So, I think we've been very clear, very consistent on this. And I think you know that is something which will be part of the boundary discussions which are taking place," he said.

Highlighting the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility on the border, Jaishankar stressed the need for both countries to adhere to the written agreements and work towards resolving any disputes amicably. He emphasized that India and China have a history of maintaining peace and tranquility along the border until recent events unfolded.

Jaishankar's remarks come in response to recent objections raised by the Chinese side regarding visits by Indian leaders to Arunachal Pradesh. The Ministry of External Affairs reaffirmed India's sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh, stating that such objections are baseless and do not alter the reality of Arunachal Pradesh being an integral part of India.

India remains committed to its position on Arunachal Pradesh and will continue to undertake developmental projects in the region for the benefit of its people. The Indian government has consistently communicated this stance to the Chinese side on numerous occasions, underscoring the inalienable nature of Arunachal Pradesh's status as part of India.
