Kathmandu Mayor Calls for Peace, Supports Naming Former Chief Justice as Interim Government Head

In a social media address to Gen Z and the broader Nepali population, Shah recognized the country's entry into a never-before political era and endorsed the establishment of a caretaker government to oversee future elections.

Rap-turned-politics figure and Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah demanded calm and patience as Nepal goes through a transition into an interim government.

In a social media address to Gen Z and the broader Nepali population, Shah recognized the country's entry into a never-before political era and endorsed the establishment of a caretaker government to oversee future elections.

Shah supported the suggestion to nominate former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the interim government head, terming it a mature and thoughtful decision by the youth.

“Your awareness, judgment, and unity deserve deep respect,” he wrote.

He cautioned political aspirants against hurrying into leadership, observing that their vigor and commitment are required for sustainable change instead of temporary solutions.

“Elections will happen. Please don’t be in a hurry,” Shah added.

Directly addressing Nepal's President, Shah called for the prompt dissolution of Parliament and the official establishment of an interim government, emphasizing the need to protect what he termed a "historic revolution" led by Gen Z.

The post is made amid mounting public talk over political reform and youth-led movements in Nepal as calls for systemic change continue to swell.

At the same time, Gen-Z leaders were still split over the leadership of the new government as of Wednesday evening, before they met with the Nepal Army's top brass that has taken the responsibility for law and order following Tuesday's unrest in Kathmandu.

The Nepali Army had extended invitations to protest leaders for talks after the resignation of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli during strong Gen-Z protests against his govt on Tuesday.

A number of Gen-Z activists have been engaged in internal deliberations to choose an apolitical figure to lead the next caretaker government. No decision has been reached, however, two Gen-Z leaders revealed.

Gen-Z leader Rabi Kiran Hamal said that figures like the former Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority, Kul Man Ghising, and Dharan City Mayor Harka Sampang, have been proposed.

Hamal, reported to be aligned with the royalist Rastriya Prajatantra Party, said he prefers a Gen-Zer in charge of the next government.

Karki, aged 73, was appointed as Nepal's first female Chief Justice in April 2016 and retired in June 2017. She was temporarily suspended following an impeachment motion filed by lawmakers of then-ruling Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Centre) in April 2017 against her allegedly biased verdict. She also led the ouster of the influential head of the anti-graft body over grounds of ineligibility and is generally known as a tough leader.

In a statement on Wednesday, Nepali Congress General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishow Prakash Sharma laid stress that all steps taken in the "doctrine of necessity" have to follow through constitutional and legal procedures.

At the same time, Nepal Police stated that more than 13,500 prisoners broke out of prisons across the country on Tuesday and Wednesday, as police operations were stalled during Gen-Z protests.

Over 500 individuals who were detained for criminal investigations also fled from custody," Nepal Police Spokesperson DIG Binod Ghimire stated.

The law-and-order situation was generally stable throughout the nation on Wednesday, though, with the majority of incidents being limited to Kathmandu Valley, he informed.
