The formal endorsement of US Vice-President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate will take place at a four-day convention starting in Chicago on Monday. Headlining that first day will be President Joe Biden.
What had been planned for this convention was for Biden to accept the nomination in a very traditional speech slated for the final day. But then, in a shocking turn of events, as the pressure mounted, Biden pulled out of the race and threw his weight in favor of Harris to take his place on the ticket. That simply means that Biden will give a speech as the opening act to the nomination convention and then pass the mantle on to Harris, who sealed her Democratic presidential nomination by a virtual roll call where she gained the majority votes on August 6.
The Republican Party Convention was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in July. It was here that ex-President Donald Trump and Senator J.D. Vance formally accepted their nominations for President and Vice-President, respectively. This convention came not too long after an assassination attempt on Trump at a Pennsylvania election rally in which he suffered an injury to his right ear, appearing with a bandage during the event.
The four days of the Democratic convention will have different daily themes: "For the People" on Monday, "A Bold Vision for America's Future" on Tuesday, "A Fight for Our Freedoms" on Wednesday, and "For Our Future" on Thursday.
First Lady Jill Biden will also speak Monday. The speech from President Biden will elevate Harris, tout his administration's successes and cast Trump as a danger to democracy. Biden will likely get a friendly reception from delegates, who may repeat a chant from an event: "Thank You, Joe."
On Tuesday it will be former President Bill Clinton and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff. Clinton was one of the first national Democrats to talk up Harris after Biden's exit, and Hillary Clinton will also speak—the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee.
On the third day, a raft of Democratic Party luminaries will take to the floor, including former President Barack Obama, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will formally accept his nomination for Vice-President. Other prominent speakers include former First Lady Michelle Obama.
Kamala Harris will deliver her acceptance speech on the final day of the convention, Thursday.
