The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has reported a successful operation conducted by the 7th Armored Brigade and Golani Infantry Brigade in the Gaza City neighborhoods of Sheikh Ijlin and Rimal, according to a recent media release.
As part of this operation, the IDF troops managed to secure multiple Hamas buildings, including the Hamas parliament, government complex, and the police headquarters, as outlined in a report by the Times of Israel.
Notably, the troops also seized control of the Hamas governor's residence in Gaza, which served as a key location for various Hamas activities. This included housing offices for its military wing and police, as well as facilities for the intelligence division. The captured sites were reportedly instrumental in the preparations for the October 7th offensive.
The IDF said it also captured a Gazan university’s engineering faculty building, which “served as an institute for the production and development of weapons", and another Hamas compound with a training base, command centre, interrogation rooms, and detention cells, Times of Israel reported.
Recent images circulating on social media have depicted Golani soldiers inside the Gaza parliament building and the military police headquarters. Concurrently, there are reports of sirens alerting the residents of Israel's southernmost city, Eilat. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have stated that the cause of these alarms is currently under investigation.
In recent weeks, the Hamas terror group has made attempts to launch long-range rockets at Eilat. Additionally, there have been incidents involving the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, who fired ballistic missiles and drones toward the city. Another Iran-backed group in Syria targeted Eilat with drones, resulting in an impact on a school last week, according to the Times of Israel. The situation is evolving, and authorities are actively addressing these developments.
