Israel Accuses UN Secretary-General of Playing into Hands of Hamas, Calls for Resignation

Erdan asserted that Guterres reached a "new moral low" and claimed to activate Article 99 of the UN Charter for the first time in relation to the Israel-Hamas conflict. According to Erdan, Guterres invoked this rare clause selectively to exert pressure on Israel, which is in conflict with Hamas.

Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, has accused Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of allegedly aligning with Hamas and has reiterated the call for Guterres's immediate resignation. This comes in response to the Secretary-General's appeal to the Security Council for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

Erdan accused the Secretary-General of moral distortion and bias against Israel, arguing that Guterres's call for a ceasefire is, in reality, supporting Hamas' control in Gaza. Erdan criticized Guterres for not explicitly attributing responsibility to Hamas for the situation, urging the terrorist leaders to surrender and release hostages to end the war. According to Erdan, Guterres's positions, as perceived by Israel, only serve to prolong the conflict by giving hope to Hamas that the war will be halted, allowing them to survive.

Erdan concluded by stating that the UN needs a Secretary-General who supports the fight against terrorism, rather than one who, in Israel's view, follows a script dictated by Hamas.
