Iran Urges UN to Label US and Israel as Aggressors on Global Stage

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has officially appealed to the United Nations, asking the international community to declare the United States and Israel the aggressors in recent conflict against Iran.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Araghchi called for action following what he characterized as aggression.

As per IANS reports quoting Iran's official news agency IRNA, Araghchi had blamed Israel for targeting residential areas, civilian communities, and crucial infrastructure with intent. He called the airstrikes "a clear violation" of the UN Charter and a "gross breach" of international law.

The Iranian envoy also accused Israel, backed by the U.S., of having attacked Iranian nuclear facilities — facilities under the watch of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). These acts, he said, constituted "a serious breach of the UN Charter, the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and the IAEA's regulations and resolutions."

Requesting that the United Nations Security Council reaffirm its responsibility to ensure world peace and stability, Araghchi called upon the Council to condemn the "aggressors" and ensure that such acts never happen again.

The crisis escalated on June 13 as Israel carried out widespread airstrikes throughout Iran, hitting military bases and nuclear facilities, according to reports. The airstrikes killed senior military officers, nuclear experts, and a few civilians.

Iran fired retaliatory waves of missiles and drones at Israeli targets. The crisis deepened further on June 22 when U.S. troops jumped into action in favor of Israel and carried out airstrikes against three Iranian nuclear complexes.

In response, Iran retaliated by attacking the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

After almost two weeks of fighting, a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran was achieved on Tuesday, bringing a temporary cessation to what had become one of the most volatile clashes in the region in years.
