Accusations from the media indicate that Iran has been preparing itself for the return of Donald Trump as the US President through a secret meeting between a senior Iranian diplomat and an adviser to Donald Trump, Elon Musk. The meeting was held at the residence of Musk in New York and involved Amir Saeid Iravani, the Permanent Representative of Iran to the United Nations.
The discussions were described as "positive," and there were news of "good news" according to Iranian officials, although it was not clear if both Trump's nominees for Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and National Security Advisor, Mike Walz, were made aware of the meeting.
However, the situation is complex because of the actions of President Trump himself. For example, his decision to order the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani caused a rupture in negotiations between the US and Iran. This meeting might be an effort by Iran to open a back channel for discussions with President Trump.
A further development reported that Tehran assured the Biden administration, through Switzerland, which handles diplomatic relations between the two countries, that it was not plotting the assassination of President-elect Trump, an apparent response to US warnings concerning an alleged plot. The US had recently charged two men with conspiracy to kill Trump, while others have been arrested for similar plots against US politicians.
Although there have been previous attempts on Trump's life, US officials say that the incidents are unrelated to Iran. The UN Mission of Tehran clarified that the country remains committed to pursuing justice legally and not through violent actions for his death.
