Indian student shot-at while escaping Kyiv: Union Minister V.K. Singh

“I received info today that a student coming from Kyiv got shot and was taken back midway. We're trying for maximum evacuation in minimum loss,” Minister Gen. (retd.) V.K. Singh said. The student has reportedly been admitted to a hospital. General V.K. Singh, who is the Minister of State in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India, has been dispatched to Poland along with 3 of his counterparts to coordinate the evacuation process of Indian nationals from Ukraine.

Amid the ongoing rescue operation of Indian nationals from Ukraine, an Indian student trying to flee Ukraine’s capital Kyiv has reportedly been shot at.

Prime Minister Modi had on Monday held a high-level meeting in which it was decided that four ministers of his cabinet will travel to five eastern European countries to coordinate evacuation under “Operation Ganga”. Gen. VK Singh has been dispatched to Poland, Hardeep Singh Puri has gone to Hungary, Jyotiraditya Scindia is in Romania and Moldova and Kiren Rijiju is in Slovakia.

On Wednesday, India abstained in a UN General Assembly vote to criticize and condemn Russia with 141 countries voting in favour of the condemnation, 5 voting against it, 35 (including India) abstained and 12 absented.

“India has been deeply concerned over the rapidly deteriorating situation in Ukraine and the ensuing humanitarian crisis," Permanent Representative T.S. Tirumurti said.

This was the fourth time that India had abstained on a crucial UN vote. The other three abstentions came at the UN Security Council of which India is a temporary member.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs has clarified that there is no hostage situation in Ukraine involving Indian students.

The Indian Air Force’s C-17 Globemaster, a military transport aircraft, was dispatched to Romania on Wednesday morning to carry home the Indian nationals who escaped Ukraine via land borders into neighbouring countries.

The flight also delivered humanitarian aid to Ukrainian nationals fleeing the warzone. It supplied massive humanitarian aid for fleeing Ukrainian citizens such as fuel, food, medical aid, blankets and other necessary items.
