Indian Student Allegedly Assaulted in Australia, in Coma

The distressing incident involving an Indian student in Tasmania has left the community deeply concerned. The student, pursuing a master's degree at the University of Tasmania, remains in a medically-induced coma following an alleged assault earlier this month.

The attack occurred around 4:20 a.m. on November 5 at a precinct in Tasmania, resulting in severe injuries to the student. He was swiftly taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital, where he underwent brain surgery for several hours due to a collapsed right lung.

Benjamin Dodge Collings, aged 25, was taken into custody by the police following the incident and charged with criminal code assault, an offense that carries a maximum sentence of 21 years in prison. Collings was granted bail by a magistrate and is expected to appear in court again on December 4.

While police have stated that there's no evidence to suggest the incident was racially motivated, the local Indian community, represented by individuals like Germanjit Singh Gill, voiced concerns and sought support for the victim, emphasizing the need for justice.

The victim's friends expressed that his family in Assam faces challenges, including not having passports to travel to Australia. The University of Tasmania has been actively involved, providing support to the family through assigned managers, translators, accommodation, and other necessary assistance.

Ben Wild, the University of Tasmania's Media Director, emphasized their ongoing support for the victim's family but highlighted limitations in discussing the case due to its legal proceedings.
