On Wednesday, the Indian mission in Russia reported the unfortunate passing of an Indian citizen, Mohammed Asfan, with efforts underway to repatriate his remains back to India. Although details surrounding the circumstances of his demise remain undisclosed, the Indian Embassy in Russia assured coordination with both the family and Russian authorities to facilitate the return of Asfan's mortal remains.
Recent media coverage has shed light on the plight of several Indian nationals recruited as security aides within the Russian military, some even reportedly engaging in combat alongside Russian troops along the Ukraine border.
Addressing the issue, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, in a statement from New Delhi last week, expressed efforts towards the swift release of approximately 20 Indian nationals employed in auxiliary roles for the Russian army.
Jaiswal emphasized, "Our priority is the timely discharge of these individuals, who are serving as support staff or aides within the Russian military." He further reiterated ongoing communications between the concerned individuals and the Indian embassy in Moscow, affirming continuous efforts for their safe return.
