Video footage of the incident—where the young Indian gentleman is filmed being pinned down by American officials at the Newark airport—has since gone viral on social media.

Official sources said that both the Indian embassy in Washington, DC, and the Consulate General in New York are meanwhile actively speaking to American authorities to get more details of what had happened.

"At this time, we have not been given any information on the nature of the incident, why he was being restrained, information about his flight, or where he was heading," one of the sources said.

Indian authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation and in touch with their US counterparts. The video that presents the man being held down and "allegedly treated like a criminal" has been captured by Indian-American Kunal Jain, who was left in anguish saying he was "helpless and heartbroken."
