Imran Khan Mocks Gen Munir's Elevation Amid Concerns Over Military Dominance in Pakistan

Gen Munir was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal on Tuesday for his contribution to the recent war with India, only the second army officer in the history of Pakistan to be so honored.

Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister who was jailed, went for a harsh swipe at Pakistan's Army Chief General Asim Munir on Thursday, and advised that rather than the newly acquired title of Field Marshal, Munir should be named "king" as the country is now ruled by "jungle law."

MashaAllah, General Asim Munir has been appointed Field Marshal. Although honestly, maybe it would've been better to confer the title of 'King' upon him instead — because currently, the nation is governed by the law of the jungle. And in the jungle, there is only one king," Khan shared on X.

Khan has been jailed since August 2023 on several charges. He also dispelled rumors that any agreement or discussion is being made by him with the military, terming such rumors "baseless lies." But he did say that if the military leadership is genuinely concerned for Pakistan's welfare, they should sit down to talk to him.

The nation is in danger from abroad, terrorism is on the rise, and there is an economic crisis. We have to stand united. I never asked for anything for myself previously, and I will not do so now," Khan declared.

Khan admonished the Shehbaz Sharif government to remain attentive to probable Indian attacks, indicating that preparations should be made against such eventualities.

He lashed out against the present system of governance, declaring that Pakistan had become a society in which laws are meant for the weak but not for the powerful people.

"The present situation is such that democracy's very nature is being suffocated. When the message conveyed is that the larger the thief, the greater will be the rank, you bury justice.". The NAB still has a case against (President) Asif Zardari’s sister concerning five apartments registered under employees’ names. She is abroad, and no one dares question her. Shahbaz Sharif was implicated in a PKR 22-billion money laundering case, yet he was made Prime Minister,” Khan added.

He lamented the destruction of Pakistan’s moral and constitutional foundation over the last three years.

"A sham trial has resumed in the Toshakhana-II case. Court proceedings are dictated by the will of one colonel, just as in jail. My sisters and lawyers are excluded from court; my friends can't come to see me; I have been deprived of contact with my children for months; my books are withheld; and access to my doctor is refused. This is a constant disregard of court orders and laws," Khan stated.

He also disclosed that he was told of drone attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and asked the provincial government to issue a formal protest to the federation and immediately take measures to halt the attacks.

"Killing innocent civilians in drone attacks doesn't stop terrorism, it just fuels it. We battled for years to end American drone attacks in Pakistan. If you really want to end terrorism, then stop shelling the residences of your own citizens," Khan concluded.
