India and China's military forces are proceeding with the enforcement of agreements to end the long-standing standoff in eastern Ladakh, making sure the process is comprehensive and effective, China's Defence Ministry said.
Chinese Defence Ministry spokesperson Senior Colonel Wu Qian, while speaking at a media briefing on Thursday, said, "Currently, the Chinese and Indian militaries are applying the resolutions pertaining to the border regions in an all-round and effective way." In reply to a question on the situation of normalization in the eastern Ladakh region, he added, "We are willing to cooperate with the Indian side to jointly maintain peace and tranquility in the border regions."
Disengagement Process and Diplomatic Engagements
India and China were able to successfully conclude the disengagement process towards the end of last year after agreeing on the withdrawal of troops from Depsang and Demchok, the last two flashpoints in eastern Ladakh. This brought an end to a four-year-old stalemate, enabling both countries to move towards the resumption of normal relations.
Subsequently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Kazan, Russia, on October 23, where they agreed to reinstate various dialogue mechanisms to strengthen communication.
Continuing diplomatic talks, India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted the 23rd Special Representative (SR) dialogue in Beijing on Dec 18 last year. In another move towards enhancing bilateral talks, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri made a visit to Beijing on January 26 to talk to his Chinese counterpart, Sun Weidong, under the 'Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister' format.
