During the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made international headlines after sharing a limousine ride together. As the two leaders conversed during the ride, Putin has opted not to reveal full information, with global observers now guessing at the potential impact.
Providing only a glimpse of the conversation, Putin informed journalists, "Well, it's not a secret. I told him about the negotiations in Alaska." The comment implied a connection between his discussion with Modi and a previous meeting in Alaska with then–U.S. President Donald Trump, where topics of the Ukraine war were said to have been discussed.
Remembering that meeting with Trump, Putin declared, "Of course we spoke English. Broken English. I had very limited talks with President Trump as the ride took some 30 seconds. I told him that I was glad to see him alive and healthy. It was more of a small talk." While no breakthrough occurred on Ukraine, Putin suggested that some "understandings" had been reached through the conversation.
Modi and Putin's own drive, in a Russian-built Aurus sedan from the SCO site to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, took much longer than anticipated. What was meant to be a 15-minute journey took near an hour, leading to speculation on what had really been said between them. After the ride, Modi said, "After the proceedings at the SCO Summit venue, President Putin and I travelled together to the venue of our bilateral meeting. Conversations with him are always insightful."
This interaction comes at a sensitive time for India, as its trade relations with the United States face strain. Washington has imposed steep tariffs on Indian exports in response to New Delhi’s continued purchases of Russian crude oil, complicating the already delicate diplomatic balance.
In the wake of the SCO summit and the changing world order, experts closely observe the potential implications of the Putin–Modi meeting, especially concerning the war in Ukraine and India's changing trade and diplomatic ties with America.
