As said by the Democratic Party presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, "Of course I am proud of having served as Vice President under Joe Biden, but my situation will be quite different for the simple reason that situations will be different".
Delivering her campaign's closing argument Tuesday from the Ellipse, part of the Capitol grounds where President Donald Trump rallied supporters in 2020 in a storming of the US Congress, Harris positioned herself as one who feels protective about people treated unfairly and taken advantage of. She said that is something she got from her mother, the India-born Shyamala Gopalan Harris.
She framed herself as an "uniter" versus Trump, whom she labeled a "divider," a "champion of working people" and not the former president who, she said, would "give tax breaks to the wealthy," "fierce protectors" of the security of the country and in contrast with the former president who, she said, is "vulnerable to flattery and favours.".
I have had the privilege to serve as Joe Biden's Vice President," Harris said, "but I will bring my own experiences and ideas to the Oval Office. My presidency will be different, because the challenges we face are different. Our top priority as a nation four years ago was to end the pandemic and rescue the economy. Our big challenge now is to reduce cost, costs that were still rising even before the pandemic, and that are too high.
Trump and his campaign want to associate Harris with all the failures and shortcomings that have plagued the Biden administration. Harris has had some trouble trying to distance herself from the President without appearing disloyal. But her campaign showed a willingness to create distance between the two, which is why they have not staged joint rallies. Still, Harris has made quite a few appearances with former President Barack Obama.
Harris acknowledged not many Americans would know her because of her long career outside Washington D.C. And recalling her career as a line prosecutor and then top law officer of the most populous state of the country — California, she said, "I did this work because for as long as I can remember, I have always had an instinct to protect.". There's something about being overlooked and, frankly, not treated fairly, something just gets to me-I do not like it. This instilled in me, which my mother taught me-what is the desire, drive to hold accountable, those who use their power or wealth to take away from others and a strong desire to protect those good, hardworking Americans, aren't always seen, haven't always been heard. And I'll tell you this, this is the type of president I will be.
Taking nearly 30 minutes for her speech Harris highlighted her differences with everything from values to vision, and international policy with Mr. Trump. And world leaders think that Donald Trump is an easy mark, easy to manipulate with flattery or favor, you can believe autocrats like Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong (Un) are rooting for him in this election. I will always support our security, advance our national interest, and make sure that the United States of America shall always remain as we must forever be a champion of liberty across the world.
