UN chief Antonio Guterres Monday said India is a fundamental pillar of the democratic system in the UN, and cooperation between the two sides is exemplary, as he welcomed Delhi's new envoy Parvathaneni Harish to the world body. Mr Harish, India's new Permanent Representative to the UN, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General at the UN headquarters here.
"You are extremely welcome. India is a fundamental pillar of democratic system in the UN, and the cooperation between India and the UN is exemplary. We believe that in your presence it will become even stronger," Guterres told Harish.
Harish told the UN chief that he carries "greetings" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for him to which Guterres replied, "Please convey to them my very very warm regards."
It was yet another commitment to continued engagement on the journey of strengthening the partnership between India and the UN. Optimistic sentiments were expressed by leaders about the future relationship between India and the UN, with possibilities for greater collaboration on global issues. In fact, the appointment of Harish will result in more significant involvement and greater leverage on the part of India at the United Nations.
