Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Wednesday he had "good agreements" with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expand cooperation between Iran and India during Tuesday's bilateral meeting between the two leaders, which were held in the Russian city of Kazan on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.
"We had good agreements to expand cooperation between Iran and India, aiming for the prosperity and security of both countries and the region, and the idea of creating a communication network between the countries of the region-the results of which will be seen in the economies of two countries," Pezeshkian posted on X Wednesday late afternoon.
During the meeting-the first since Pezeshkian's election as the ninth President of Iran in July following Ebrahim Raisi's death in a helicopter crash on May 19-PM Modi had reaffirmed India's commitment to deepening the age-old bilateral ties with Iran.
Referencing the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 30-the day he took up office as Iran's President-said that the assassination had marred the achievements of his government to make reconciliation inside Iran better and also strengthen relations with neighboring and regional countries.
We believe that war hampers the development of countries, and that is why we have been, and are, decisively seeking to prevent the spread of tension and conflict in the region," Pezeshkian said. Prime Minister Modi, meanwhile, expressed deep concern over the widening of the conflict in West Asia and reiterated India's call to de-escalate the situation.
The two leaders reiterated the importance of Chabahar for reconstruction and redevelopment of Afghanistan and furthering trade and economic ties with Central Asia. As India believes that the development of Chabahar Port is the greatest support of New Delhi's current cooperation with Tehran, Pezeshkian said the implementation of the bilateral agreements, including the agreement to develop Chabahar Port, must also be expedited. The reinforcement of economic cooperation between regional states will enhance the welfare and security of our countries," said the President of Iran, adding that he has already presented a proposal to the other regional countries for creating a communication network between them and noted that BRICS can also create ground for considering such an idea.
