Former Vice-President Mike Pence has condemned the debunked conspiracy theory suggesting the FBI instigated the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. In an interview with CNN, he vehemently dismissed the theory, emphasizing his firsthand experience witnessing the violence that day and expressing his outrage at the assault on the Capitol.
Pence praised the FBI for its efforts in apprehending those involved in the attack, urging that they be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. He reiterated his belief that the attack should never have happened and criticized former President Donald Trump for his reckless words on that fateful day, suggesting that history would judge Trump's role in the events.
Regarding the upcoming Iowa Caucus and New Hampshire primary, Pence sees an opportunity for Republicans to usher in new leadership and provide the party with a fresh start for the forthcoming elections and beyond.
Recalling the chaotic events during the Capitol attack, Pence was rushed out of the Senate chamber as rioters breached the Capitol. Despite Trump's attempts to pressure Pence to alter the election results, Pence stood firm in his constitutional duties.
Since the insurrection, Trump and Pence have gone their separate ways, including during President Joe Biden's inauguration. Pence attended the ceremony in Washington while Trump departed for his residence in Florida before the inauguration began, highlighting the significant rift between the two figures.
