The FBI has confirmed that Donald Trump sustained an injury from a bullet or a fragment thereof during an assassination attempt at his rally in Pennsylvania earlier this month. According to the bureau’s statement released on Friday, “The injury to former President Trump’s ear was caused by a bullet, whether whole or in pieces, fired from the rifle of the deceased assailant.”
In response to the FBI’s revelation, Trump informed his supporters that he had accepted the FBI’s apology. The FBI’s Director had previously told lawmakers that the wound on Trump’s ear could have been caused by a bullet, leading to a formal apology.
Trump addressed his supporters at Turning Point USA’s “The Believers Summit” in West Palm Beach, Florida, stating, “The FBI apologized, and we accept their apology.” This was in reaction to the bureau’s admission regarding the nature of the injury.
On July 13, Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt while speaking at an election rally in Pennsylvania. The would-be assassin, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by the Secret Service.
Trump criticized the FBI’s earlier statements, saying, “Did you see the FBI apologize today? They suggested it might have been a bullet, or perhaps glass. Oh really? Where did the glass come from? Or maybe it was shrapnel. Where did that come from? Then they concluded it was a bullet.”
Earlier this week, FBI Director Christopher Wray informed Congress that the agency was still evaluating evidence to determine whether the injury was caused by a bullet, shrapnel, glass, or another object. On Friday, the FBI confirmed it was indeed a bullet.
This confirmation from the FBI is the most definitive statement yet regarding Trump’s injury and aims to address the ongoing political controversy. Although the new statement provides clarity, it does not significantly alter the broader context of the situation, according to CNN.
Trump has previously claimed that he was struck by a full bullet, asserting on his Truth Social platform that “it was, unfortunately, a bullet that hit my ear, and hit it hard.” This incident has fueled political debates and criticisms, with Trump framing the attack as a defense of democracy while continuing to challenge Wray’s testimony.
