This is a historical move, as Fatemeh Mohajerani has been appointed the new Iranian administration's government spokesperson that will head under Masoud Pezeshkian. For the first time, a female will pose questions for the government in this prominent position.
According to various reports from Iranian media, the appointment was made Wednesday by President Pezeshkian himself.
At 54 years, Mohajerani comes with immense experience to the position. She has a Doctorate in Business Administration from Edinburgh, headed the Technical and Vocational Training University of Shariati-for women-during the 11th government, and in 2017 was appointed by then-Education Minister Seyyed Mohammad Bat'hai to head the Center for Brilliant Talents. She has held various other posts within the Education Ministry.
This appointment follows another important step forward for women under the Pezeshkian administration. Last week Shina Ansari had been appointed Deputy President and Chief of the Department of Environment, replacing Ali Salajegheh. She got her Ph.D. in Environmental Management from Science & Research University, held various positions such as Advisor at the Air Quality Control Centre - Tehran, and held leadership positions in the Environmental Department.
Pezeshkian's cabinet is also composed of Farzaneh Sadeq Malvajard, the second female minister to take oath of Iran since 1979. Sadeq was endorsed as the Minister of Roads and Urban Development. She served as Deputy Minister of Urban Planning and Architecture from January 2019 until July 2023. Although facing some opposition, Sadeq required more than a simple majority from lawmakers in the Parliament to win approval. She garnered 230 votes from the 285 present lawmakers to seal the victory. Now 48, Sadeq takes over from Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi, the Health and Medical Education Minister during Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's second term between 2009 and 2013.
