During Visit to Pakistan, Malaysian PM Ibrahim Expresses Support for UN Resolution on Kashmir

"We have said clearly that we are committed to support the UN Security Council resolution, but the concerns on human rights are, of course, our concerns," Ibrahim said after a bilateral meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Shehbaz Sharif.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, on a three-day visit to Pakistan, told reporters on Thursday that his country supported the UN Security Council resolution on Kashmir.
"We have said clearly that we are committed to support the UN Security Council resolution, but the concerns on human rights are, of course, our concerns," Ibrahim said after a bilateral meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Shehbaz Sharif.

An obvious reference was to the 1948 UN Security Council resolution. He also said that his country would continue talking about the Kashmir issue "through channels that are acceptable" and prayed that "the issue is amicably resolved."

Pakistan and Malaysia agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in diverse fields, including economy, trade, investment, commerce, agriculture, tourism, education, and defence.

"We discussed trade, investment opportunities, strategic and defence cooperation, tourism, agriculture, semiconductor, green energy, skilled labour and youth empowerment," Sharif said during a joint presser, referring to the topics discussed during their meetings.

Exporting Halal meat worth USD 200 million per annum and selling basmati rice was also discussed, the PML-N leader added.

The 73-year-old said thousands of Pakistani students are getting quality education in Malaysia and hopes that Malaysian students will come to Pakistani institutions.
Sharif lavished praise on the visiting leader, saying that his trip would go a long way in improving ties. "I am grateful to your team and you…and together we will reach new heights," he said.

The Malaysian prime minister said a trade office will be opened in Karachi next month for increasing bilateral trade, which includes import of Halal meat and rice from Pakistan.
We discussed special economic zones, the issue of trade, investment, military, defence procurement, he added that Malaysia looks forward to increasing the number of flights to Pakistan as well as welcoming Pakistani tourists to the country.

He also agreed to assist Pakistan in matters related to the import of skilled labor from Pakistan.

Ibrahim appreciated and welcomed Pakistan's stance on Gaza and Palestine.

The Malaysian president further declared that Pakistan's founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah and national poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal were held in very high respect.

Both leaders had highlighted the sufferings of West Asia and urged Israel to ceasefire immediately.

"I hope that through joint efforts a ceasefire will be put in place," Sharif said.

The two prime ministers witnessed the exchange of signed Memorandums of Understanding and a Letter of Cooperation.

In this connection, Ibrahim had one-on-one talks with Sharif. All issues related to bilateral, regional, and international topics of mutual interest were covered, the statement said.

Sharif wished Malaysia good luck in its chairmanship of ASEAN, a political and economic union of 10 states in Southeast Asia, from 2025 onward.

Ibrahim welcomed Pakistan's continued engagement with the group as a Sectoral Dialogue Partner and further stated appreciation for increasing engagement between Pakistan and ASEAN as well as greater Pakistani engagement with ASEAN.

Both the prime ministers noted the long history of close cooperation between the two countries as they reaffirmed their commitments to strengthening the mutually beneficial partnership.

Malaysian leader, with a high-level delegation, reached Islamabad on Wednesday and was received by Sharif.

Today, when the Malaysian prime minister arrived at the PM House, he was given a warm welcome. Sharif received him at the main gate.

Both the nations' national anthems were played. The Prime Minister of Malaysia inspected the guard of honor presented by a contingent of the Pakistan Armed Forces.

Sharif had also hosted a luncheon in honor of the Malaysian prime minister and his delegation at his house.

Agreement on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership: India and Malaysia agreed to the comprehensive strategic partnership in August during the three-day visit by Ibrahim to that country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ibrahim had extensive talks concentrating on resetting the relations that came under some strain during the tenure of Mahathir Mohamad.
