China's Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, has underlined that India and China, as two major developing economies in Asia, need to "firmly oppose" tariff conflicts and trade wars while upholding the global multilateral trading system.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Xu stated, "Jointly, we should promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, strongly oppose any kind of tariff and trade wars, jointly maintain the multilateral trading system, protect the common interests of developing countries, and drive the collective rise of the Global South."
Terming former U.S. President Donald Trump's recent 50% tariff imposition on Indian commodities as unjustified, the envoy said Washington, after enjoying the fruits of free trade for half a century, was now abusing tariffs as a means to make unreasonable profits. He characterized the step as "unfair and unreasonable" and reaffirmed that China firmly opposes it.
Xu spoke during the celebration to mark the 80th anniversary of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War victory. In his speech, he emphasized that the world is facing a turbulent period, with drastic changes and increasing geopolitical tensions.
"Currently, changes unseen in a century are accelerating, unilateralism and acts of bullying are on the rise, and the world has entered a new period of turbulence and transformation. Humanity once again faces a choice between peace and war, dialogue and confrontation, win-win cooperation and zero-sum game," he said.
