China on Wednesday warned Taiwan that it will take drastic measures against Taipei if they try to cross any red line or move towards independence, news agency Reuters reported.
"If separatist forces in Taiwan seeking independence provoke, exert force or even break through any red line, we will have to take drastic measures," spokesman of the Taiwan Affairs Office Ma Xiaoguang told mediapersons.
Ma further said that a peaceful reunification with Taiwan can be made possible but China will take drastic measures if any red lines on independence were crossed. He also said that the provocation by pro-independence forces and intervention by external factors is expected to grow in the coming months. "Next year, the Taiwan Strait situation will become more complex and severe," he said.
China continues to claim that Taiwan is a part of its territory. The communist country has also set up military and diplomatic pressure on democratically governed Taiwan to concede its authority over the region. Beijing also sent several air missions over the Taiwan Strait to build pressure on Taiwan.

Growing tensions over Taiwan have also become one of the primary issues that have strained relations between China and the United States. China has also described the island as the most sensitive issue in its ties with the United States.
United States has followed a "strategic ambiguity" for a long time regarding the involvement of US military troops in case Taiwan is attacked by China.
