'Beautiful Sight': China mocks US capitol chaos, draws parallel with 2019 Hong Kong protests

State media tabloid Global Times on Thursday tweeted a side by side photo of Hong Kong protests and American riots to display the “sharp contrast” between the two protests. Hong Kong protesters had earlier occupied the city's Legislative Council Complex back in July 2019.

China mocked America’s Capitol building riots episode and even compared it with the Hong Kong riots of 2019 after supporters of Donald Trump’s supporters broke into the building and hijacked it on Wednesday.

The Washington protest against the certification of Joe Biden as the President of United States saw hardcore Trump fans invade the US Capitol to protest the election defeat, taking selfies, scuffling with security and ransacking parts of the building. 

During the times when Hong Kong was protesting against China, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi referred it to as a ‘beautiful sight’. However, protests in Hong Kong were peaceful at that time.

"It remains yet to be seen whether she will say the same about the recent developments in Capitol Hill."

China's Communist Youth League also described the unrest as a "beautiful sight" on the Twitter-like Weibo platform.

China’s Twitter alternate Weibo witnessed the hashtag “Trump supporters storm US Capitol” racking up 570 million views on Thursday, as users compared the global support for Hong Kong’s protesters with the outpouring of condemnation for the pro-Trump mob.

"At present, all European countries' leaders have shown double standards and condemned it (Washington rioting)," read one Weibo comment which gained over 5,000 likes.

"What happened in the Hong Kong Legislative Council last year is being repeated in the US Capitol," wrote another user in a comment with over 4,500 likes.

Citizens of Chinese city do not enjoy full democratic rights, due to which a popular protest broke out carried out by the citizens of Hong Kong in the metropolitan. The demand was of full democracy and abolishment of an unpopular bill that was being pushed through by the city's unelected leadership.

Beijing responded to the 2019 unrest with a crackdown, imposing a harsh security law on the restless city, arresting scores of critics and smothering dissent.
