China has declared its firm opposition to external interference in the internal affairs of the Maldives and expressed strong support for the island nation's sovereignty and independence. The statement comes following the conclusion of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu's inaugural visit to China amid a diplomatic dispute with India. Muizzu, perceived as pro-China, has been entangled in a row with India over derogatory remarks made by Maldivian ministers against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The joint statement emphasizes the mutual support between China and the Maldives in safeguarding their core interests and respecting each other's sovereignty.
Despite the diplomatic tensions, the joint statement highlights agreements between China and the Maldives in various areas, including the Belt and Road Initiative, economic and technical cooperation, blue economy, digital economy, green development, infrastructure construction, and assistance for people's livelihood. Both nations expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of Muizzu's visit, emphasizing the significance of the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between China and the Maldives.
Additionally, the joint statement underscores the Maldives' commitment to the one-China principle and opposition to any actions undermining China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Maldives also opposes "Taiwan independence" activities and pledges not to develop any official relations with Taiwan. China and the Maldives signed 20 agreements during the visit, covering cooperation in tourism, economic and trade cooperation, and the Action Plan for Building a China-Maldives Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership (2024-2028). The visit is deemed of great significance in advancing the bilateral partnership since the establishment of diplomatic ties 52 years ago.
