Canadian Diplomat Condemns Promotion of Violence by Pro-Khalistani Elements

"The Government of Canada is cognizant of recent imagery displayed in Brampton on Sunday. Canada's stance remains unequivocal: the advocacy of violence is never acceptable in our nation," MacKay stated in response to a message posted by Canadian minister Dominic LeBlanc on June 8.

As pro-Khalistani factions persist in disseminating anti-India sentiments through extremist rhetoric and actions within Canada, the Canadian High Commissioner in India, Cameron MacKay, emphasized on Tuesday that there is zero tolerance for hate or the glorification of violence in North America.

Public Safety Minister LeBlanc had voiced apprehensions regarding imagery depicting the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Vancouver.

"This week, there were reports of imagery depicting the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Vancouver. The promotion of violence is never acceptable in Canada," expressed the Canadian Minister.

On June 8, MacKay had expressed his dismay over reports of an event in Canada commemorating the assassination of the late PM Indira Gandhi.

"There is no place in Canada for hate or the glorification of violence. I categorically condemn these activities," he affirmed.

The Indian government has consistently voiced deep concerns and strong objections to the unchecked perpetuation of such actions at events in Canada, highlighting the enabling political environment for separatism, extremism, and violence.

Last month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar criticized the Justin Trudeau government for harboring pro-Khalistani elements, warning that further deterioration in bilateral relations would ultimately be detrimental to Canada.

"Freedom of speech cannot extend to advocating violence, supporting separatism, and terrorism in a foreign country. It cannot... Khalistani groups have exploited Canada's freedom laws for years. However, when politically expedient, the Canadian government accommodates these individuals, who also form a significant voting bloc," remarked Jaishankar during the 'Vishwabandhu Bharat' interaction in Nashik, Maharashtra.

As pro-Khalistani elements persist in anti-India activities, New Delhi has repeatedly communicated to Ottawa that democratic nations upholding the rule of law should not permit intimidation by radical elements under the guise of freedom of expression.

"Our relations have soured due to the actions of these individuals, who have even threatened our Ambassador and various diplomats stationed in the country. They have launched smoke bombs inside the High Commission, creating significant difficulties for our diplomats. Canada has provided refuge to individuals who support terrorist activities against India. The government there must reassess the entire situation," Jaishankar asserted.
