US President Joe Biden said, "there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country." He has been praising the law enforcement agencies who have protected the former President Trump while speaking on an "attempted assassination" on Sunday.
Biden was briefed on the incident at Trump's golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, after saying: "As I have said many times, there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country, and I have directed my team to continue to ensure that Secret Service has every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to ensure the former President's continued safety."
In the statement, Biden added further, "I have been briefed by my team regarding what federal law enforcement is investigating as a possible assassination attempt of former President Trump today. A suspect is in custody, and I commend the work of the Secret Service and their law enforcement partners for their vigilance and their efforts to keep the former President and those around him safe. I am relieved that the former President is unharmed. There is an active investigation into this incident as law enforcement gathers more details about what happened."
According to US media, the alleged attacker is identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, who was arrested for trying to assassinate former US President Donald Trump when the latter went golfing in Florida on Sunday. Born in Hawaii, Routh is a former construction worker in North Carolina. Recently, he had also tried recruiting fighters to Ukraine. The FBI has categorized this event as an "attempted assassination."
The FBI has launched an investigation into what appeared to be an attempt to assassinate former President Trump as the agency confirmed Tuesday night that it was responding to West Palm Beach, Florida.
Investigators say that at the scene, there was found an AK-47 style rifle, two backpacks stuffed with ceramic tiles, and an abandoned GoPro camera. This is the second attempt to assassinate Trump in two months; the earlier one was on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania. In the previous attempt, Trump was hit by the bullet in the right ear, and a lone gunman who fired the shot was shot dead by a police sniper.
The incident happened yesterday at around 1:30 p.m. at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. Sources said that a Secret Service agent who was combing the periphery of the golf course ahead of a visit by Trump saw a gun sticking out of thick underbrush near the edge of the golf course. Authorities said they didn't know if the suspect fired any shots. Authorities estimated the distance from the location of the suspect to the scene as 350 to 500 yards, far enough within rifle range.
The license plate of his suspected car was imprinted on the CCTV camera, so he was easily apprehended within a short time.
On shooting, Trump tweeted: "There were gunshots in my neighborhood, but before the rumor mill starts running wild and out of control, I wanted you all to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!
The White House confirmed that both the President and Vice-President Kamala Harris, who are currently in Washington D.C. have been briefed of the situation. In the statement, "The President and Vice-President have been briefed about the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was golfing. They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team."
Vice-President Harris also commented on X, saying, "I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America."
The shooting reported occurred, apparently, near Trump's golf course in Palm Beach. According to CNN, shots have been coming from inside the forest surrounding the golf course as the Secret Service agents returned fire.
