Biden Calls Sinwar's Death a 'Good Day,' Sees It as an 'Opportunity' for Talks

This is a good day for Israel, for the United States, and for the world," Biden said. "To my Israeli friends, this is no doubt a day of relief and reminiscence, similar to the scenes witnessed throughout the United States after President Obama ordered the raid to kill Osama Bin Laden in 2011.

US President Joe Biden described the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar as a "good day" for Israel, saying it was akin to the sense of relief in that country as in the US after the killing of Osama bin Laden in 2011. Mr Biden added Sinwar's death presented "an opportunity" for a political settlement between Israel and Palestine.

Citing an "unprecedented" agreement between Israel and Hamas, Biden appealed for an end to hostilities, saying, "There is now the opportunity for a 'day after' in Gaza without Hamas in power, and for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike. Yahya Sinwar was an insurmountable obstacle to achieving all of those goals. That obstacle no longer exists. But much work remains before us."

The Hamas leader is accused of planning the terrorist attack against Israel on 7 October wherein more than 1,200 people were martyred in that single day alone, among them 46 Americans. More than 250 were captured as hostages, and 101 are still missing.

Sinwar, the leader of the terrorist group Hamas, was responsible for the deaths of thousands of Israelis, Palestinians, Americans, and citizens from over 30 countries," Biden said.
He then went on to elaborate more about the defense and security aid his government gave the Israelis after the October 7 massacres. I tasked special operations people and our intelligence professionals to work side by side with their Israeli counterparts to help locate and track down Sinwar and other Hamas leaders hiding in Gaza. Drawing from our intelligence help, the IDF relentlessly pursued Hamas's leaders, flushing them out of their hideaways and forcing them to run. Perhaps it is one of the most exceptional military operations ever, and, indeed, Hamas leaders live and move through hundreds of miles of underground tunnels, organized on several stories underground, determined to protect themselves without any regard for civilians suffering above ground," he added.
