The International Crimes Tribunal in Bangladesh issued an arrest warrant Thursday against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 45 others, including top leaders of the ruling Awami League, over alleged crimes against humanity during the recent mass student movement.
The tribunal, led by its chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumdar, made the orders following two petitions submitted by the prosecution with the tribunal seeking warrants of arrest against the two, Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam was quoted as saying by the Daily Star.
The tribunal also directed the authorities concerned to bring the 46, including Hasina, before it after arresting them by November 18, he said.
The interim government of Bangladesh announced in August that it would place those responsible for the killing during the recent mass movement of students against the government headed by Hasina before the International Crimes Tribunal.
The violence sweeping across Bangladesh since the ouster of Prime Minister Hasina has taken over 230 lives there, raising the overall death toll from when the massive protest by students against a controversial quota system in government jobs began in mid-July to over 600.
