He said that the Chief Justice had resigned and sent his resignation letter to the Law Ministry for onward transmission to the President.
Earlier, student protest leader Hasnat Abdullah had given an ultimatum for the chief justice's resignation alongside other Appellate Division justices. On Saturday, Hassan called for a meeting of the full court with all Supreme Court justices, but students responded with an announcement of blockade of the court premises, and issued a one-hour deadline for Hassan's resignation.
Hassan was appointed in 2023 and was viewed as a stooge of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
As protests spread, Bangladesh Army personnel were deployed in the court area where hundred of students had gathered. The army asked the agitators to remain calm and peaceful and not to squander government expenditure.
The violence has claimed over 400 lives, prompting Hasina's August 5 resignation. Microfinance founder and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has taken charge of the interim government with the ousted premier's exile to India, vowing to reinstate peace and security to minority groups like Hindus.
