Aung San Suu Kyi awarded 4-year imprisonment for 'inciting dissent, breaking Covid rules'

Win Myint, the ousted president of Myanmar, has also been jailed for four years. Suu Kyi is facing a total of 11 charges and according to BBC, she could be jailed for life. Suu Kyi has been under house arrest at an undisclosed location after her National League for Democracy (NLD) government was toppled by the Myanmar Army in February this year.

Aung San Suu Kyi, the former State Counsellor of Myanmar, was on Monday sentenced to 4 years in prison on charges of inciting dissent and breaking Covid rules under a natural disasters law. Win Myint, the ousted president of Myanmar has also been jailed for four years. Suu Kyi is facing a total of 11 charges and according to BBC, she could be jailed for life.

3. Suu Kyi's NLD had won an absolute majority in the 2015 general elections and had been running the government since 2016. The army staged a coup and ousted the government alleging massive voting fraud in the November 2020 general elections which the NLD won comprehensively with the majority in both houses of Parliament.

4. Both Suu Kyi and ousted president Win Myint have been sentenced to 4-year in jail but it's not clear where will they serve their sentences.

5. United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet called the trial a “sham” and “politically motivated.” The United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) have condemned the verdict and demanded the restoration of democracy in Myanmar.
