Zardari previously served as President from 2008 to 2013 and garnered support from the coalition government led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Following the conclusion of Arif Alvi's five-year term as president last year, the stage was set for the election of a new president. However, due to the delayed formation of the new electoral college, Arif Alvi continued in office until now.
