A Michigan charter school teacher who taught moral values has been accused of third-degree criminal sexual conduct after she allegedly had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student.
The defendant, 26-year-old Jocelyn Sanroman, allegedly revealed the affair to a co-worker, who in turn reported it to authorities, Click On Detroit wrote.
The alleged incident occurred in 2023 when Sanroman was working at Waterford Township-based Oakside Prep Academy. The prosecutors claim that the relationship became public when Sanroman confided in another teacher, who in turn contacted the police.
"This defendant is charged with leveraging her position of authority to abuse a minor victim. These allegations are the quintessential violation of the trust put in educators by parents and the community," said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald.
"As someone who used to be a teacher myself, I commend the teacher who called police on this matter, safeguarding other students from further abuse."
If convicted, Sanroman could receive a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison on the third-degree criminal sexual conduct charge.
In a release to FOX 2, the school administration stated that the accusations were extremely troubling and highlighted that prompt action was taken as soon as the claims emerged.
"We are committed to a safe and inclusive environment for the students in our care. Their safety and well-being are our highest priority," the statement stated.
This case adds to a growing national concern over inappropriate teacher-student relationships in schools. Reports show that from 2014 to 2019, there were over 500 documented incidents of educator misconduct, with nearly one in ten students reporting some form of sexual impropriety by a teacher.
Experts attribute various reasons for such an increase, ranging from increased public awareness to the influence of social media in erasing borders, poor training in professional ethics, permissive hiring practices, and lack of uniform policies regarding teacher-student relationships.
