It was their surprise controlling campaign in the Euro 2024 opener for Switzerland on Saturday at the RheinEnergieStadion over Hungary 3-1 delighting the supporters.
What followed was truly sensational - a Euros debut for Kwado Duah, breaking the deadlock with a finish any player would have been proud of, only for the linesman to raise his offside flag. Yet, VAR came to the rescue and, in doing so, heralded an unforgettable start to international life for the 27-year-old, on only his second start for his country.
Switzerland continued with the onslaughts and were repaid again when Michel Aebischer added to their lead in the 20th minute with an exquisitely placed shot from outside the box. Soon after that, Ruben Vargas had the chance to add to the lead but the Swiss attack would just not keep relenting.
But then Hungary got their lifeline when Barnabas Varga capitalised on a header from Dominik Szoboszlai's inspirational leadership as the youngest captain in Euro history at 23 years and 7 months.
As the game's last moments started ticking away, Switzerland finally put the result beyond any doubt as Breel Embolo stole the show upon a defensive slip-up to seal the third goal-a vital victory that places them second in Group A behind only hosts Germany.
Switzerland now opens her next contest against Scotland on June 20 with an eye on reserving their spot within the knockout phase after the good start to the tournament.
