Lionel Messi is as resolute as ever to succeed at Inter Miami, seeking to accumulate further silverware in his already considerable trophy cabinet. Almost two years since his transfer to Major League Soccer (MLS), the Argentine icon looked back on his experiences so far.
Since joining Miami, Messi has been instrumental in winning the MLS Supporters' Shield, his 46th career title—a record for most titles by any men's footballer in history. He also contributed to Inter Miami winning its first-ever title, the MLS League Cup. In an interview with Apple Music, Messi highlighted the ambition of the club.
"Here at Inter Miami, we want to win championships. That's what we aim for. We want to grow as a team, show our quality, and there is great chemistry with the new guys who have come in," he explained.
The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner also revealed that he is completely present in the moment, enjoying this phase of his career without gazing too far into the future.
"My future? I am very happy right now, and I'm enjoying every second of my career. Whether it's club games, time with the team, or moments with family and friends, I'm just living for the moment without thinking too much about what comes next," Messi said.
Messi’s arrival in MLS was a game-changer for the league. While the United States has long welcomed high-profile footballers nearing the twilight of their careers, his decision to leave Paris Saint-Germain for Inter Miami stunned the world, given his legendary status in the sport. The 37-year-old expressed his hope that other clubs will follow in Miami’s footsteps.
"I always dreamed of playing in MLS someday. I desired this transfer, and Inter Miami interested me because it's a club that is developing and improving. I wanted to be involved in that development and contribute to making the MLS a strong global football brand," Messi explained.
He also complimented the league's fast development and its synchronization with American sports culture.
"MLS is growing massively as a league, and it's changing rapidly. I wish it keeps expanding, with other clubs emulating the lead by Inter Miami," he added.
