Cavan Sullivan, a midfielder for the Philadelphia Union, became the first youngster to ever make a professional MLS debut—America's top professional league of football.
The 14-year-293-day-old Sullivan made his debut in the 85th minute as the Union faced the New England Revolution on Wednesday night, breaking a two-decade-old record by 13 days previously held by a one Freddy Adu, who debuted at 14 years and 306 days in April 2004.
But more than that, Sullivan broke Adu's long-standing MLS record and became the youngest debutant across all of the major North American professional sports leagues. He will also be the youngest player to make a debut among the top five European soccer leagues if he makes his debut on or before July 29, 2024.
On May 9, 2024, earlier than this, Sullivan signed an historic MLS deal with the Union, becoming the youngest player ever added to the club's first-team roster in the process, placing him as the fifth youngest in MLS history to sign a first-team contract.
