Bengal government consents to administer oath to Mamata on Oct 7

The oath taking ceremony of the chief minister triggered controversy when Dhankhar wrote a letter to the Speaker of the Assembly Biman Banerjee saying that the practice and proceedings at the level of the assembly and the government have apparently emanated from misconception of law, leaving it to speculation whether the governor would go to the assembly for the oath taking ceremony as requested by the state government.
Mamata Banerjee breaks many records with Bhabanipur victory

Banerjee defeated her BJP rival Priyanka Tibrewal by a margin of 58,835 votes. Of the total 1,16,75 polled votes, she secured 85,263 votes, Tibrewal 26,426 and CPI-M's Shreejib Biswas only got 4,226 votes. Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, who won from this seat in the Assembly polls earlier this year but resigned to make way for Banerjee.

After 21 rounds of counting, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee secured 84,709 of the total 1,17,875 votes, securing more than 71 per cent of the total votes polled while Tibrewal secured 26,350 votes, little more than 22 per cent of the votes. CPI(M) candidate Shreejib Biwas managed to get only 4,201 votes.

According to the data provided by the election commission, Banerjee who is pitted against Priyanka Tibrewal, has secured 28,355 votes against Tibrewal who has managed to get 4,398 votes after the sixth round of counting. Mamata Banerjee has secured a lead of 23,843 votes, projecting an easy victory against her BJP rival.

Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said, "In the last three days, they (DVC) have released more than 10 lakh cusec of water, most of which has been released without informing the state. This is a crime and the state is not going to sit and watch. If they do it again, the state will be forced to demand compensation."

However, Kalyani did not resign from the legislative Assembly, nor did he say anything about joining any other party. Terming Raiganj MP Debasree Chowdhury as a traitor, the BJP MLA said, "I have come here to give service to the people. I cannot work with people who are more interested in other things and so I resigned. More specifically, I resigned because of Debasree Chowdhury. She has back-stabbed me. I cannot work with people like her."

The Bhabanipur assembly seat became vacant after TMC veteran Sovondeb Chattopadhyay resigned making room for the chief minister. There was no election in the other two assembly constituencies - Samserganj and Jangipur - both in Murshidabad in the recently concluded assembly polls because the contesting candidate died just before the poll day.
