The setting up of the Legislative Council, to again make West Bengal one of the few states with a bicameral legislature, was one of the main manifesto points of the Trinamool Congress in the recent Assembly elections. Chief Minister Banerjee, who spent most of her time at the Nizam Palace with her party leaders who were arrested by the CBI in the Narada case attended the cabinet meeting

"Concerned about the alarming situation. Call upon @MamataOfficial to follow constitutional norms & rule of law. Police @WBPolice @KolkataPolice @HomeBengal must take all steps to maintain law & order. Sad -- situation is being allowed to drift with no tangible action by authorities," the governor tweeted after violence erupted in front of the gate of the CBI regional office at Nizam Palace on Monday morning.

"They have not given any notice and now they have arrested me. They didn't even seek the permission of the Speaker. We will fight it in the court," State Transport Minister and former Kolkata Mayor Firhad hakim told the media after he was arrested from his Chetla home in South Kolkata earlier in the day.

The 25-year-old woman later died due to a Covid-19 infection at a Delhi hospital, according to police. Six persons including the two main accused have been named in the FIR.  The police said that they are after the accused men and have formed a team to look into the matter after the victim's father filed the FIR. 

Banerjee pulled out at the last minute during former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Dhaka in 2011, due to which the Teesta water-sharing deal could not be signed. "Now, upon any Indian dignitary's visit to Dhaka, the most prominent question is when the Teesta deal will be signed," the Daily Star said.

The most surprising name is of perhaps former Finance Minister Amit Mitra, who had not contested this election due to ill-health. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was worried about the key portfolio as Mitra was unable to handle the ministry for the last few days because of his deteriorating health condition. He didn't even present the budget last time.

The buzz grew stronger when BJP's Krishnanagar North MLA and national vice-president Mukul Roy decided to stay away from the first meeting of the BJP's legislative body in the Assembly on Friday, where it was decided that the party would boycott the Assembly proceedings until post-poll violence stops completely in the state.

In Assam, the BJP failed to gain a majority on its own, winning 60 of the 126 seats. Its allies AGP won 9 and BPF 4 seats, but the competition for the post of chief minister is getting bitter. Himanta Biswa Sarma, BJP's lead strategist in Northeast as the convenor of the pro-saffron Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA), seems determined not to lose out on his lifetime ambition for the top job.

The incident took place when Muraleedharan accompanied by BJP state leader Rahul Sinha was going to Ghatal in East Midnapore to meet some of the BJP supporters who were injured in the attack allegedly by the TMC goons. When his convoy was at Panchkhuri that falls under West Midnapore, suddenly there was brick batting on his vehicle.

The MHA has also asked the West Bengal Governor to send a report on the law and order situation in the state. According to the ministry, the team will review the situation in West Bengal and submit a report on the ground situation. "The MHA team will submit its report on violence within 48 hours," an official said.
