Bengal government starts acting tough on Partha Chatterjee's confidant bureaucrats
Two of these bureaucrats have been sent on compulsory waiting for an indefinite period by the state personnel and administrative reforms department, which is under the direct control of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The most among the two is Sukanta Acharya, a West Bengal Civil Service (Executive Office), who had been the personal assistant to Chatterjee during his tenure as the state education minister.

The court said that ED's investigation officers will talk to the correctional home Superintendents and the latter will have to permit the central agency sleuths to interrogate Chatterjee and Mukherjee. While Chatterjee has been sent to the Presidency Central Correctional Home, Mukherjee has been sent to the Alipore Women's Correctional Home.

ED sources said that some preliminary decoding of the contents in the two diaries had been possible with the help of related experts and what has been initially deciphered is that the contents in the diaries are related to the inward and outward transactions of the proceeds of the scam. "Initially, we thought that the contents were related to only the money collected. But now it seems that these have some details of the payments made to give the scam a smooth running.

"They checked into a room and soon came out and entered the hotel bar. Soon a fourth person joined them and after some interaction that fourth person left. But soon he returned with a bag which he handed over to the three MLAs. We think that the bag contained the cash that was recovered from the boot of the car the three MLAs were travelling in," a CID source said.

"Lot of speculations are doing the rounds on this issue. I want to clarify that some reshuffling is required in the state Cabinet for the purpose of smooth functioning. We will announce the details of the reshuffle on Wednesday at 4 p.m. In this process, some existing Cabinet members will be relieved of their ministerial responsibilities and their experience will be utilised in party organization. Similarly, four to five new faces will be inducted," Mamata Banerjee said.

"He claims that he was just the custodian. He never asked for any money neither accepted any from candidates. There was a party diktat and he was following orders. He was supposed to sign documents prepared by others. The money was also collected by others and sent to him. He had been instructed to keep the money in safe custody. Hundreds of crores were later taken away for 'party' use. Only a fraction of the sum was confiscated. This is what he has revealed so far," an official said.
