Is Virat Kohli seeking divine intervention to come out of form slump?

Kohli, who is in England with the India team for the month-long multi-format series, has been going through an extraordinarily long lean patch which has seen him not score a century since November 2019. His performance in the rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston was one of the reasons for India losing the game by seven wickets.

In India's ongoing tour of England, Kohli has performed way below his lofty standards with the bat. He scored 11 and 20 in the fifth and rescheduled Test match against England at Edgbaston, before making one and 11 in the two T20Is at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge. Kohli, who missed the first ODI against England at The Oval due to a groin strain, was dismissed for a 25-ball 16 in the second ODI.

Babar Azam posted an image of him walking with Kohli on twitter and wrote, "This too shall pass. Stay strong. #ViratKohli." Fans, though, were surprised with Azam's concern for the India batter, saying he shouldn't be praising a rival team cricketer. India's T20I squad to take on the West Indies is also missing Kohli's name, with Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal rested for the same tour.

With players like Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer in the mix, it is getting tougher for Kohli to own a place in the playing eleven, especially with the Men's T20 World Cup happening in Australia in October-November. "Now the situation is such that you might be forced to bench Kohli from the T20 playing XI. He will have to perform better. If world No. 2 bowler Ashwin can be dropped from Test side, then (the) world No. 1 batter can also be dropped," said Kapil to ABP News.

The 33-year-old Kohli has gone more than 100 innings in all forms of cricket including IPL without scoring a hundred since hitting 136 in Kolkata against Bangladesh in November 2019. The star batter has often got starts, even gone past fifty several times since that innings in Kolkata but hasn't managed to hit his 71st international century yet.

Experts and fans alike had hoped that Kohli would return to form now that he no longer has to carry the burden of captaincy, the 33-year-old batter failed to fire in the Indian Premier League and was rested for India's T20I series against South Africa. Back in the squad in England, Kohli had scores of 11 and 20 in the rescheduled fifth Test against England, resulting in people again questioning his ability to regain his form.

Nothing wrong with Virat's technique, sometimes you also need a bit of luck: Azhar

However, Azhar felt it's a matter of time before Kohli rediscovers his form, adding that just one century for the cricketer will get him firing again. Kohli has endured a long lean path, having not scored a century since November 2019 in any of the three formats. He then endured a poor IPL 2022 season, scoring 341 runs from 16 matches at 22.73, even though he is the highest-ever run-getter in a single IPL season, when he scored 973 in 2016 for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
