Tokyo Olympics: Dressel wins fourth personal gold in men's 50m freestyle

The reigning world champion touched home in an Olympic record time of 21.07 seconds, 0.48 seconds before Florent Manaudou of France. Bruno Fratus of Brazil took a bronze in 21.57 seconds. The 24-year-old Dressel has had three gold prior to Sunday's final -- from 100m freestyle, butterfly and 4x100m freestyle relay. Robert Finke of the United States won the men's 1,500m freestyle.
Anand replaces Vidit as captain of Indian chess Olympiad team

Anand replaces Vidit Santosh Gujrathi, who had led the gold medal winning Indian team last year. India had won the gold jointly with Russia. According to AICF, for the first time the Indian team has got a corporate sponsor in the form of city-based internet major Microsense Group, promoted by S. Kailasanathan, who himself is a former Tamil Nadu state chess champion.
Chinese Lyu becomes oldest weightlifter at 37 to win Olympic gold

Lyu, who turned 37 on Tuesday, broke the record of Rudolf Plukfelder of the Soviet Union, who was 36 years old when he won gold in 1964 in Tokyo, reports Xinhua. Zacarias Bonnat Michel of the Dominican Republic bagged a silver with 367kg. Italian Antonino Pizzolato nabbed a bronze with 365kg. Having taken up weightlifting in 1998, Lyu said the past two decades were all about his love for the sport.
Tokyo Olympics hockey: India women's team makes maiden entry into quarterfinals

India had defeated South Africa 4-3 in their last league match early in the day but their passage to the knockout stage depended on the result of the match between defending champions Great Britain and Ireland as the latter was placed fifth in the group and could finish fourth ahead of India. For India to qualify, Great Britain had to beat Ireland and that's what happened in a well-fought match on Saturday.

Playing in her second Olympics, Elina's determination was the story of her bronze-medal run. Four of her six matches were won in a deciding set. Elina defeated Germany's Laura Siegemund, Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic, Greece's Maria Sakkari, and Italy's Camila Giorgi, before losing in the semifinals to Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic.
Confident of getting the better of Great Britain: India hockey coach Reid

India chief coach Graham Reid expressed confidence in his team's ability to get the better of their opponents on Sunday, saying, "To be honest, facing any of the four European teams who have come directly from the Euro Championships was always going to be a difficult quarterfinal game, but I think it really matters on which one you get. But probably Great Britain are the ones we are comfortable with and very confident with."
Olympics: Tai Tzu beats Sindhu in straight games in semifinals

Sindhu had drawn early advantage with her aggressive display in the first game, opening up a 6-3 lead. However, Tai Tzu fought back before Sindhu again opened up a three-point lead at 11-8. However, Tai Tzu then won three quick points to draw level and from there, the two went neck and neck before the Taiwanese player closed the first game in her favour 21-18.

Throughout the bout, Li never gave up the upper hand and ended up winning 5-0 to go through to the semifinals at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Arena. The Chinese was undoubtedly the superior boxer on show. Pooja, ranked eighth in the world, had earlier lost to Li in the semifinals of the 2014 Asian Games and 2020 Asia Oceania Olympic qualifiers.

Djokovic had arrived in Tokyo trying to become the first man to have a Golden Slam. He had already won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon in 2021 and was trying to complete the rare phenomena with a gold medal at the Olympics followed by the US Open title, which starts at the end of August.
