Table tennis: Mumbai teenager Diya Chitale wins U-19 title in Peru

The Mumbai-based Diya scored an authoritative win against Juliana Lozada 11-6, 11-2, 11-5 in 31 minutes at the Villa Deportiva Nacional, Lima, Peru, on Saturday. The 19-year-old Diya, was dominant from the opening round and progressed to the winner's podium without dropping a game.

The committee expressed deep concern over the discriminatory treatment meted out to women and girl players in table tennis in the context of award of prize money and payments. "This is disconcerting because the effort needed, proficiency and skills required as well as the level of competition in a girls' game, is in no way lesser than that exhibited in a men's or boys' game," said the five-page order.

Tennis legend Boris Becker found guilty of four charges under Insolvency Act

The 54-year-old German was declared guilty of charges including removal of property, two counts of failing to disclose estate and concealing debt. However, Judge Deborah Taylor released Becker on conditional bail ahead of sentencing on April 29, when he could face a jail sentence carrying a maximum term of seven years for each count. Becker was declared bankrupt on June 21,2017, over an unpaid loan.

The Indian duo of Sathiyan and Batra, ranked world No 7 lost to the world No 1 pair of Cheng I-Ching and Lin Yun-Ju of Chinese Taipei 3-0 (4-11, 5-11, 3-11) in the mixed doubles final at the Lusail Sports Arena. Sathiyan and Batra were playing in their third final since their reunion after the Tokyo Olympics. The Indian table tennis pair had won WTT Contender Budapest and silver at WTT Contender Tunis, last year.

For the second time Ashleigh Barty, Australia's world number one player was crowned WTA Player of the Year and US Open champion Emma Raducanu grabbed the Newcomer of the Year award, on Tuesday. Barty is Australia's second WTA singles No.1 player after Evonne Cawley, while Raducanu, who is just 19, is the first British woman to win a Grand Slam.

The World No 5, who has also beaten Roberto Quiroz and Elias Ymer this week, won 84 per cent (27/32) of his first-serve points and fired nine aces to triumph. Medvedev then sealed victory for the Russian Tennis Federation, overcoming Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 6-4 in 66 minutes. The 25-year-old committed just six unforced errors and saved the one breakpoint he faced.
