He is the second senior India player to miss out on the T20 World Cup with an injury after Ravindra Jadeja, who is recovering from knee surgery. The 28-year-old Bumrah had picked up a back injury earlier last month, which had ruled him out of the Asia Cup. He returned for the three-match T20I Series against Australia, which India won 2-1, and picked up a wicket in two matches.

India head coach Rahul Dravid had said recently that the injured Bumrah is in the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and the team management is waiting for official confirmation on the next steps, adding that till the time the pacer is not officially ruled out of the T20 World Cup, they will always be hopeful.

But Rahul expressed surprise over him getting the Player-of-the-Match award in India's 16-run win, which also clinched the series in their favour

The 4-3 series win will be a big boost for the reigning ODI world champions as they aim for the ICC T20 World Cup trophy later this month in Australia. Chasing 210 for victory, Pakistan could manage just 142/8 in 20 overs with Chris Woakes wreaking havoc at the top of the order by dismissing skipper Babar Azam (4) and then getting rid of the dangerous Shan Masood (56).

The 28-year-old pacer has been ruled out of the ongoing T20I series against South Africa with a back injury which has cast doubt over his participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia. Bumrah missed the Asia Cup due to the same injury but made his return in the T20I series against Australia. Though he missed the first game, he was available for the final two matches which India won to win the series.

With uncertainty over injured Jaspreet Bumrah's availability for the mega event, Indian team management is set to carry at least two additional fast bowlers as back-up for the premier pacer and net bowlers in the preparatory phase of the tournament. Siraj and Umran will travel with the squad to Perth on October 6, where the Indian team will train for a week before travelling to Brisbane for its first warm-up match on October 17.

The 28-year-old was rushed to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru from Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday to undergo scans on his back after being ruled out of the ongoing three-match T20I series against South Africa. It has been learnt that Bumrah went for scans and the assessment is underway at the NCA.
