In a press conference Smriti Irani said, "Rahul Gandhi called upon foreign powers from a country whose history has been to enslave India. While tearing down India's democratic systems and institutions, Rahul expressed his regret that foreign forces do not come and attack India." Taking a dig at Rahul Gandhi, she said, "I want to ask a question.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has clearly said that if the country has to progress then women will have to ensure their participation in the development of nation. Without women's participation, development of any nation is not possible," she said at a function to mark the International Women's Day which is observed on March 8.

The episode began when the minister while replying to a question by BJD member Chandra Sekhar Sahu pertaining to her department, referred to him as "gentleman" instead of "honourable member".

"Italia insulted 100-year-old Hiraben, the mother of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She was maliciously attacked by AAP. I say the words of Kejriwal are being spoken by Italia. And I dare Kejriwal to come to Gujraat and speak such words... You (Kejriwal) are not sparing a 100-year-old woman who has nothing to do with politics. I dare you Mr. Kejriwal to come to Gujarat and speak your own words," Irani said while speaking to mediapersons here.
