India reports 495 new Omicron cases, tally reaches 2,630

Of the total, 995 people have so far recovered, the Ministry said, adding that the variant has been detected in 26 states and UTs till date. Maharashtra tops the list with 797 Omicron cases, of which 330 patients have been discharged. The state reported 144 new Omicron cases in the last 24 hours.
3rd wave in Delhi: Doctors advise people to follow Covid norms

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Wednesday morning announced the start of a third Covid wave in the national capital, and warned the cases can jump to close to 10,000 with the infection rate nearing 10 per cent by the evening. By evening, as predicted by Jain, Delhi reported 10,665 fresh Covid-19 cases - highest since May 12 - and eight deaths, and the positivity rate also shot up to 11.88 per cent.

On Tuesday, India had reported 37,379 Covid cases. With the addition of new deaths, the toll has reached 4,82,551. The active caseload has jumped at 2,14,004 which constitutes 0.61 per cent of the country's total positive cases. Meanwhile, the Omicron infection tally has climbed at 2,135 across the nation. However, out of the total Omicron positive cases, 828 have been discharged from hospitals.
Five state assembly polls unlikely to be postponed

The commission has asked the government to vaccinate all those on election duty ahead of the polls. Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan submitted a report to the commission according to which the assembly polls in Manipur, Goa, Punjab, Uttarakhand and UP are likely to be held at the scheduled time as mandated by the Constitution. The assembly tenure of UP is due to end in May.
Election Commission to discuss Covid situation with top health officials

A source said that the Commission will discuss the current Covid situation for poll-bound states and will seek update on new Covid variant Omicron from Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan. The commission is also likely to seek suggestions on improving the Covid protocol for poll campaigning, polling days, and others.
Omicron scare: Night curfew to come into effect in Noida from tonight

The order will remain in force from December 25 to January 31, 2022. Earlier on December 1, Section 144 was clamped down and restrictions were imposed over fears of spread of Covid-19 during the festival season. "During the said period, there will be several competitive examinations for which the administration has to make preparations to smoothly conduct them," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ashutosh Dwivedi, said .
Rising Omicron risks do not dissuade 58% Indians from travel: Surve

It indicated that while such a large number of people have travel plans, only 18 per cent of citizens have made their bookings so far. Besides, the survey showed that of those who plan to travel in the next 90 days, the highest number, 49 per cent are likely to visit family, friends and also undertake other miscellaneous travel while 21 per cent have plans to travel to a holiday destination.
Gujarat extends night curfew timings amid Omicron scare

According to a notification, the change in the timings will be effective from December 25 in the cities of Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Junagadh, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar and Gandhinagar. Gujarat has seen a surge in Covid-19 cases of late. On Thursday, more than 100 new cases were reported in a single day after nearly seven months. On Friday, it saw a little less than 100 cases, including 13 with Omicron variant.
India reports 6,650 new Covid cases, Omicron tally rises to 358

India registered 6,650 new Covid cases and 374 deaths in 24 hours. With the addition of the new deaths, the toll has climbed to 4,79,133. The Omicron infection tally has climbed to 358 across the nation. However, out of total Omicron positive, 114 have been discharged. So far 17 states have reported Omicron infection, said the Union health ministry.
Delhi gears up to handle 1 lakh daily cases amid Omicron scare

The government will also increase the daily Covid testing capacity from around 60,000 to 70,000 at present, to 3 lakh per day, while strengthening the home isolation module to handle 1 lakh positive cases daily.
