Mumbai looked in trouble when they were 104/3 in 12 overs. But Suryakumar smashed 20 runs off the 13th over from Kuldeep Sen and from there on, he never looked back, hitting eight fours and two sixes while David was brilliant in hitting two fours and five humongous sixes for Mumbai to go to seventh place at the points table.

In the 1000th IPL game, Jaiswal shined the brightest by mixing solidity in technique and power in shots which were conventional and innovative while using the crease well in hitting 16 fours and eight sixes at a strike-rate of 200 in an innings where the next best score was just 18.

Sunday's match also marks the 1000th game of the IPL, with Rohit Sharma captaining Mumbai Indians for the 150th time in the competition apart from turning 36. While Rajasthan Royals sit in third place at the points table, Mumbai are placed in ninth position. After winning the toss, Samson said left-arm pacer Trent Boult comes back into the playing eleven.

Despite some strong individual performances in the absence of some of their main players, both Kolkata and Mumbai have six points each, and are placed seventh and eighth respectively on the points table. Former India leg-spinner Anil Kumble, who was the head coach of Punjab Kings last year, believes the task for the two teams is a challenging one, but it is also something which is not impossible.

Gujarat had begun IPL 2023 with a five-wicket victory over four-time champions Chennai Super Kings at home. Even after Gill's fifty, Piyush Chawla and Kumar Karthikeya struck in the middle overs and pegged the Titans back but failed to ride the momentum. Manohar (42 off 21) and Miller (46 off 22) turned the tables with a 71-run partnership, while Rahul Tewatia gave the finishing touches with his unbeaten 20 off 5 as GT set a massive target for MI.

GT skipper Hardik Pandya said: "The pitch looks good, looks watery. It has been a belter though. The way we fought back in the last game we won but LSG dominated for 36 overs. Credit to the boys for the way we came back. We showed whatever it is we never give up. Luck was on our side. We are playing the same team. Josh Little comes back (in substitutes) for someone, that's it."

Though Mumbai had fifties from Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav apart from a fine 44 by captain Rohit Sharma, they fell short by 13 runs as Punjab took their points in the ten-team table to eight. "We were in control until the 15th over and then they got 96 runs in the last five (overs). That is some hitting. We got it wrong, and it is frustrating because we dominated and when we did lose, we lost it incredibly big.

After their bowling unit conceded 109 runs in the last six overs to allow Punjab Kings to post 214/8 after being asked to bat first by Rohit Sharma, Green blasted 67 off 43 deliveries and Suryakumar Yadav hammered 57 off 26 balls as Mumbai Indians could only manage to score 201/6 in 20 overs as they fell short despite a brave chase. Skipper Rohit Sharma smacked a 27-ball 44 but in the end, that effort went in vain.
