Hockey World Cup: India beat South Africa 5-2 to finish 9th with Argentina
Before India defeated South Africa, Argentina thrashed Wales 6-0 in their classification match and thus secured the 9th place with India. Malaysia and France too won their matches and thus shared the 13th position while Japan and Chile finished 15th. All eyes in Rourkela were on India's clash with South Africa and the hosts seemed to feed off the energy of the jam-packed crowd in the Birsa Munda Stadium.

In the second game of the day, Belgium faced Netherlands in the finals rematch from the 2018 Men's World Cup. India's lone goal came from Salima Tete in the 50th minute. It was Netherlands who made a sensational start to the game with a 4th minute goal by Marijn Veen. They doubled the lead in the 13th minute. It was yet another field goal and this time the scorer was Lidewij Welten. She scored the third goal for her team in the 29th minute putting India under pressure.

With their wins, South Africa, Wales, Argentina and India head into the 9-12 playoff matches while losses for Malaysia, France, Chile and Japan see them go to the 13-16 playoff matches. All classification matches will take place on January 28. Malaysia were quicker off the blocks with form man Faizal Saari managing to get a shot in the circle inside the first minute, but South Africa survived that early chance and started to get in the game on counter attacks.

Germany, who had won 7 out of the 9 shoot-outs over the past 4 years, were perfect in the shoot-out, scoring all 4 of their attempts. David Goodfield missed England's third attempt and Danneberg, who was in the goal instead of Stadler for the shoot-outs, saved the final English attempt by Ansell to give the Honamas a famous win.

The Dutch team will now face Belgium in the semifinals on January 27. Netherlands and Korea played a fascinating first quarter in the quarterfinals. It was end to end action as both teams looked to play on counter-attacks and managed to find spaces through the midfield to successfully penetrate opposition circles.

They joined World No.1 Australia in the semifinals and await the winner of the Netherlands and Korea on Wednesday to decide a place in the final. The Red Lions struck via Tom Boon in the 10th minute and Florent Van Aubel then doubled their lead in the 15th minute. The two strikes in the first two quarters proved enough as they defended stoutly to thwart New Zealand.

Australia were leading 4-3 with five minutes to go when Spain earned a penalty stroke for a stick-check foul inside the shooting circle. But the experienced Carter correctly guessed the direction of Miralles' push and palmed it away. If Spain had scored that goal, they would have taken the match into a shoot-out.
Hockey World Cup: Korea fight back from 2-goal deficit to beat Argentina in shoot-out, reach quarters
Korea were down 3-5 with 10 minutes to go for the final hooter, scored two goals from penalty corners, and survived some valiant attempts by Argentina as the match ended 5-5. The Korean goalkeeper had an exceptional match as he pulled out at least four superb saves and also made a couple of good blocks in the shoot-out to seal victory for his team.
