Rapid increase in vegetable prices can push headline CPI-inflation for July much higher at 7.5%

Brinjal, another vegetable with a weight of 0.37 per cent, was up 48 per cent YoY last month and peas (weight = 0.1 per cent) has seen a price rise of more than two-thirds in July'23 vis-a-vis a year ago, Motilal Oswal Financial Services said in a report.
Retail inflation falls to 5.66% in March as food prices slide

The retail inflation fell mainly due to sharp slide in food inflation, which stood at 4.79 per cent in March against 5.95 per cent in February. Retail inflation was 6.95 per cent in March 2022. With CPI-based inflation falling below 6 per cent, it is now within the RBI's tolerance level, which is between 2 per cent to 6 per cent.
Retail inflation sees marginal fall to 6.44% in February 2023

Food inflation also slid to 5.95 per cent in February 2023 compared to 6 per cent in January. Consumer price index (CPI) based inflation had touched 6.52 per cent in January 2023, which was a three-month high owing to higher food prices. However retail inflation was 6.07 per cent in February 2022, and therefore CPI-based inflation in February 2023, at 6.44 per cent, was higher compared to the year-ago period.

The commentary for the consumer sector indicated continued weak rural demand, but most of the companies also stated that there were some green shoots on rural consumption towards the end of the quarter that persisted into January 2023. There was also hope expressed that the likely good Rabi harvest along with a decline in CPI inflation would spur staples demand, albeit, gradually.
UK inflation cools to 10.1% in January

Although still at a high level, inflation eased again in January. This was partly driven by the declining air and coach travel prices after a previous steep rise, ONS Chief Economist Grant Fitzner said, Xinhua news agency reported. The annual inflation rate for transport was 3.4 per cent in January, down for a seventh consecutive month from a peak of 15.2 per cent in June 2022, and the lowest rate since February 2021, the ONS data showed.
