CWG 2022: Lovepreet Singh claims bronze in Men's 109 kg as lifters continue to reap medals

The 24-year-old Lovepreet Singh lifted 163 in snatch and added 192kg in clean and jerk for a combined total of 355 kg, which put him behind Junior Periclex Ngadja Nyabeyeu of Cameroon, who had a total of 361 and Jack Hittila Opeloge of Samoa who had a total of 358. He was a bit lucky as Australia's Jackson George Roberts-Young failed to lift 150 kg in snatch in two attempts.

Though Sindhu won her women's singles match, Kidambi Srikanth in men's singles and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty in men's doubles and Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand lost their respective matches as India went down 1-3 to Malaysia.
CWG 2022: Indian women's hockey team loses to England 1-3

The Indian women's hockey team, which has lost to England in the Olympic Games bronze medal match also, conceded early goals and were down 0-3 before getting a lone consolation goal in fourth quarter. Giselle Ansley (3'), Tess Howard (40'), Hannah Martin (53') found the back of the net for England, while, Vandana Katariya (60') was the only scorer for India.

The two gold and one silver on the day took India's tally at Birmingham to 12 medals -- five gold, four silver and three bronze medals to move up to sixth in the medals table. The Women's Fours of Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayan Moni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey made history for India by bagging a maiden gold medal in lawn bowls, beating South Africa 17-10 in a well-contested final, banking on their positive sprits, hard work, determination and steely nerves to script the best day for the county in this little-known sport.

Achanta Sharath Kamal lost for the first time in the tournament but Harmeet Desai and G Sathiyan first won doubles and then registered victories in their respective singles matches as India beat Singapore 3-1 in the CWG 2022 to defend their gold medal from 2018. Earlier in the match G Stahiyan defeated Koen Pang 12-10, 7-11, 11-7, 11-4 to make it 2-1 in the favour of India.

Punam, won the bronze medal in the 2014 CWG in the women's 63kg category and gold medal in the 69kg category in the 2018 at Gold Coast, started on a disappointing note as she failed to lift 95kg in her first attempt. However, she recovered well to successfully lift the same weight in her second attempt and then went on to equal her personal best and national record of 98kg in snatch in the final attempt to keep herself in a medal hunt.

It was an even start to the final, as India took the lead after the first end but South Africa went ahead after the second. Thereafter, in-form Indian surged ahead to a 8-2 lead by the seventh end. But, it could not score a single point over the next four ends as South Africa roared back into contention, levelling the scores 8-8 after the 10th end.

Harjinder Kaur from Mehas village near Nabha in Punjab lifted 93 in snatch and 119 in clean and jerk for a below-par total of 212 kg in the competition and at one time thought that she had lost out on a medal as Alexis Ashworth of Canada, the eventual silver medallist, lifted her season's best of 123 kg in clean and jerk to shoot up to 214 in the standings.

India took a solid 4-1 lead in the match with Mandeep Singh (13', 22') scoring a brace and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay (3') and Harmanpreet Singh (46') contributing a goal each. But with Nicholas Bandurak (47', 53') scoring a brace, and Liam Ansell (42') and Phillip Roper (50') scored a goal each.

This is her second medal at the Commonwealth Games after she won silver at the Glasgow in 2014. Vijay Kumar bagged a waza-ari after just 5 seconds of the bell and held on to claim the Ippon to take home the bronze medal in the men's 60 Kg Judo event. Vijay Kumar made quick work of Cyprus' Petros Christodoulides in the opening minute of the bronze medal match to claim a medal for India.
