This is concerning. X, still owned by Elon Musk, has started reading some of the users' direct messages in relation to reported violations or service misuse and complying with legal obligations. As per this move, the corporation is going against the policy at X to ensure end-to-end encryption for all content on the platform.
When an X user, @kimdotcom, shared this policy update, Elon Musk did not respond directly to the fact that reviewed DMs could be accessed by the government. He only acknowledged the limitation of encryption on one-on-one messages at the moment but assured changes in group messages would be made in the future.
It was also stated by Musk that audio and video calls are end-to-end encoded on X by default. That exhibited the response to just a single portion of what the user concerned about this scenario.
Most of those users were stillunset by the apparent manual DM review policy of X.
"Is it just me or did Elon misinterpret Kim's question about government access to DM's?" one user asked.
You've failed to answer the question. Why does X comply with government requests to spy on our direct messages? another user explained. This case shows the fear users are having over privacy and X's commitment to encryption.
